Garden Gnomes
In order to add beauty to gardens, people use different kinds of decorations or ornaments. Garden gnomes are one of those used to accessorize the gardens. They are considered as mythical characters which are very small and have an underground way of living. They are often pictured as very small males who have beards and they usually wear hats that are red in color and are also known to smoke pipes. They are made having different positions and doing some activities like fishing or sleeping or planting. But these are not very ordinary figurines. They have their own history and issues. Let us have a little review of their history.
The first garden gnomes were made in Germany, in a town known for its ceramics products. It was during the mid-1800s when they were produced based on the myths of the locals. This is a way to let the people enjoy the stories of the gnomes’ willingness to help them in the gardens during nighttime. Its use was not only popular to Germany but to France and England as well. But it was during World War II when the production was stopped because the producers were instructed to support the war. It was during the 1960s when they were produced again but this time they were made from plastics. But others still tried to use clay.
Those who love these garden gnomes believe that they are creatures who bring good luck especially in their gardens. They are mostly vegetarians and very happy little people who love to have fun and like to help other in different things and activities. Others even believe that if you have them, they will help with the things you do to make your garden more beautiful, it’s like they are little workers. Others say that their characteristics really have something to do with their history.
But not every one is into these gnomes. There are those who disagree with the usage of gnomes as garden ornaments. They believe that having them in the gardens is like having slaves. They want the gnomes to be freed. There are even existing groups which take out gnomes in some gardens and they bring them to the forests. Because they believe that they belong to the forest and here they have their freedom. This prank activity is known as gnoming. The popular groups who free gnomes are France’s "Front de Liberation des Nains de Jardins" and Italy's "MALAG" (Garden Gnome Liberation Front). There are even those people who get the garden gnomes from the yards and they are sent to take trips all over the world, this is known as the travelling gnome prank and later became the idea of the Travelocity’s Roaming Gnome.
So always be sure that you that there are no people like these in your area when you use garden gnomes. Because they are really serious about their call and their belief and they will do things to free the gnomes from your gardens.
